Tilmicosin + Bromhexine

In veterinary medicine, the combination of tilmicosin and bromhexine is used to treat respiratory infections in livestock, such as poultry and cattle. The two drugs work together to clear the infection and manage symptoms.

What the combination does

Tilmicosin: A macrolide antibiotic that works by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis. It is effective against a broad spectrum of bacteria, including MycoplasmaHaemophilus, and Pasteurella species, which are common causes of respiratory infections in animals.

Bromhexine: A mucolytic and expectorant agent. It thins and loosens mucus, making it easier to clear from the airways.

Combined effect: Research has shown that adding bromhexine to tilmicosin enhances the antibiotic’s effectiveness. Studies indicate that bromhexine accelerates the penetration of tilmicosin into body tissues, leading to higher and faster drug concentrations in the lungs. This improved delivery can lead to better clinical outcomes and a reduction in mortality.

Common use cases

Veterinary products combining tilmicosin and bromhexine are often administered orally via drinking water or injection to treat respiratory diseases in:

Poultry: Infections caused by Mycoplasma gallisepticumMycoplasma synoviae, and Ornithobacterium rhinotracheale.

Cattle and sheep: Respiratory diseases associated with Mannheimia haemolytica and Pasteurella species.

DOSAGE

Orally with drinking water in the dose of – 30 ml per 100 liters of drinking water (75 mg of tilmicosin and 5 mg of bromhexine per 1 liter of drinking water) for 3 days. The treatment can be repeated later in case of stressful situations and new cases of illness.

During the treatment period, the poultry should only receive the prepared solution as the only source of drinking water. Fresh solution should be prepared every 24 hours.

Withdrawal periods:

Meat is permitted after 8 days from the last treatment.

CONTRAINDICATIONS
